1987 Rolex Explorer II Model 16550 “Creamsicle” Tritium Rail

Many Rolex aficionados refer to the Explorer II reference 16550 as a transitional model, as it was developed after the reference 1655 and before the reference 16570. Produced for a short time between 1985 and 1989, this Rolex sports watch is also a bit harder to come by, making it a pretty rare collector’s item. When Rolex replaced the 1655 with the 16550, it introduced the calibre 3085 to the Explorer line, which also happened to be the same movement used within the GMT Master II. This means that the Explorer II reference 16550 boasts an independently moving GMT hand on its dial. The case is also unique as it utilizes a stainless steel bezel.

The Explorer II reference 16550 was originally available with either a black or white dial. This watch boasts a dial that is aged to a creamy white hue due to a defect in the paint. Rare and highly sought after, Explorer II’s with this (“Creamsicle”) defect command a premium in the market.
